Inspired by the medieval fortress in southern France of the same name, Carcassonne is a tile-laying game in which players fill in the countryside around the fortified city. |
Followers can take many different roles determined by the type of tile on which they're placed:

Each new tile placed creates an ever-expanding board on which players can then add their followers. |
As the map grows, so does the opportunity for players to disrupt each other’s plans. Everyone is adding to the same map and only one follower can be on any given feature at a time—so if you don’t place a follower on something, someone else probably will. |
Players score points by having followers on features as they're completed. The player who makes the most strategic placements of tiles and followers will score the most points and win the game. |

My wife and I have been playing Carcassonne Classic (includes The River mini-expansion) for the past year, and I provided a glowing 5-star review of that version of the game. This review will be providing thoughts about the differences between the Classic version and this updated version, and hopefully helping those that own the Classic version decide if it's worth it purchasing this new updated version.- Visuals -Not that Classic Carcassonne tiles were in a real need of a facelift, but the tiles have now been updated to be a little more modern, with a bit more detail on them. I like the updated look. They have also splashed some more color on the inside of the box and on the back of the score card. Not really necessary, but a nice touch. Also it appears that the tile backs are the same color as the expansion tiles (at least the Inns and Cathedrals expansion tiles) which makes it so you cannot tell them apart when simply looking at the backs. This makes it so you cannot cheat by determining which tiles you want to go for based on needing one from the standard or expansion tiles. I still recommend making a bag that you can place all tiles in to allow for passing the tiles around from player to player, rather than needing to spread them out on the floor. My wife made a simple bag out of cloth, that fits right inside the game box (see attached picture).- Gameplay -The Abbot. The Abbot can be placed on monasteries or in gardens (which are in fields on random tiles). Gardens are treated like a monastery for scoring purposes (scored based on how many tiles are surrounding it). The great thing about the Abbot is you can retrieve him from the game on any turn that you decide not to place a meeple, and when doing so, you score all possible points. For example, if you have an Abbot on a monastery, with 5 tiles (including the monastery tile), and on your turn you don't place a meeple on your placed tile, you can retrieve your Abbot and score 5 points. Awesome! I also like that you have gardens in which to place your Abbot, giving you the potential to have higher scoring games.- Overall -I would say this is definitely worth upgrading to the new version if you are a current owner and fan of Carcassonne Classic. We ended up gifting our Carcassonne 1.0 to our friends.
